STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest at UW-Stevens Point 72-50 on Saturday. The Pointers pulled away from the Blugolds during a momentum-swinging third quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (6-12, 1-6) were neck-and-neck with the Pointers (14-4, 4-3), who received votes in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, for the first half. But UW-Stevens Point pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Blugolds 23-4 in the period to break things open.
- UW-Eau Claire closed the first quarter with a 6-2 run, giving the Blugolds a 13-10 lead at the first break. They held the Pointers to 19% shooting in the opening quarter.
- The game continued to be back-and-forth in the second quarter, with neither side leading by more than five. UW-Stevens Point took a 35-30 advantage into halftime.
- The Pointers held the Blugolds scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half, which was enough to build up a 22-point cushion. UW-Stevens Point started the half with a 17-0 run, and the Blugolds couldn't recover. The Pointers shot 53% in the period while the Blugolds shot 18%.
- UW-Stevens Point led by 20-plus points the rest of the way.
- Lauren Meudt (Jr. - Waunakee, Wis.) scored 13 points to lead UW-Eau Claire. Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) added eight points, and Jessilyn Ernst (So. - Pardeeville, Wis.) and Kailey Tulachka (So. - Mishicot, Wis.) chipped in with seven points apiece.
