ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team bested St. John's (Minn.) in a shootout 6-4 on Friday at Municpal Athletic Conference.
Eli Reimer (So. - Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) scored his first hat trick as a Blugold to help power UW-Eau Claire to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game featured eight goals across the final two periods between the two teams. Reimer's hat trick came entirely across the final 24 minutes of the contest.
- The Blugolds (6-9-1) took the first lead of the game on a goal from Dayne Hoyord (So. - Scandinavia, Wis./Stevens Point) midway through the first period, but St. John's answered a minute later to tie the game. The score remained 1-1 entering the first intermission.
- UW-Eau Claire erupted for four goals in the second period. Charlie Erickson (So. - Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) started the flurry, scoring with just over eight minutes left in the period. The Blugolds' final three goals of the period all came in final four minutes of action. Reimer scored with three and a half minutes left. Colin Stein (Sr. - Pewaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial) added a power play goal 30 seconds later to make it 4-2.
- The Johnnies (6-8-0) pulled a goal back with just over two and a half minutes left, but Reimer scored his second goal just 21 seconds later to make it 5-3 entering the third period.
- St. John's scored to make it a one-goal game with under six minutes to go, but Reimer scored an empty-net goal with under a minute left to complete his hat trick and seal the Blugolds' victory.
- Seven different players had assists for UW-Eau Claire.
- Max Gutjahr (Jr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) made 29 saves in net.
