Blugolds come up just short in ranked clash with No. 5 Gustavus

SAINT PETER, Minn. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team dropped a clash with No. 5 Gustavus Adolphus College 4-3 on Tuesday at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The 12th-ranked Blugolds took an early lead, but the fifth-ranked Golden Gusties rallied and held off a late push from UW-Eau Claire to win the ranked clash.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UW-Eau Claire (11-6-0) got off to a scintillating start when Ava Johansson (So. - Rogers, Minn.) scored just 48 seconds into the game. Jess Eykyn (Fr. - Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) assisted.
  • The Blugolds remained in front until the final minute of the opening period, when the Golden Gusties (9-3-0) scored the tying goal. They carried that momentum into the second period, where they scored within the first two minutes to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Gustavus Adolphus made it 3-1 with a power play goal with 12:16 left in the second period.
  • Ava Bullert (Jr. - North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) had an answer for the Blugolds. She converted a pass from Samantha Bandholz (Sr. - Richfield, Wis./Slinger) into the team's second goal just before the midway mark of the second period, making it a 3-2 deficit.
  • Gustavus Adolphus scored a fourth goal early in the third period, but UW-Eau Claire didn't go away. The Blugolds got a power play goal from Bandholz with 4:17 left, assisted by Bullert, to slash the lead to 4-3.
  • Despite a late push from the Blugolds, the Golden Gusties were able to see out the victory from there.
  • Alexa Backmann (So. - Rogers, Minn.) made seven saves for UW-Eau Claire.
  • Both teams went 1 for 3 on the power play.
  • Despite producing seven goals, the game didn't feature many shots. The Blugolds held a 15-11 advantage in that department.
