EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team took an early lead but couldn't hold on in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of No. 12 UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The 12th-ranked Pointers scored three times in the final period to pull past the Blugolds in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) clash.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire (5-9-1, 4-3-0) pulled in front just over two minutes into the contest. Connor Szmul (Sr. - Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) scored off assists from Colin Stein (Sr. - Pewaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and Carter Bradley (Fr. - St. Louis, Mo./Oakville), putting the Blugolds ahead 1-0 shortly after the opening faceoff.
- The game remained 1-0 in UW-Eau Claire's favor until the Pointers (10-4-1, 4-2-1) scored their opener in the late stages of the second period. They struck with just under four minutes left until the second intermission to tie the game.
- UW-Stevens Point scored the game winner midway through the third period. The Pointers added an insurance goal after intercepting a pass in the Blugolds' defensive zone with three and a half minutes left, and iced the game away with an empty-net score in the final minute.
- Max Gutjahr (Jr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) made 26 saves in goal.
- UW-Eau Claire held a 33-30 advantage in shots.
