RIVER FALLS, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team fell to Colorado College 22-8 in the semifinals of the inaugural Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament on Friday at Ramer Field. The Tigers — the top seed and winners of the WIAC regular-season title — built an 11-goal lead in the first half and never looked back to advance to the championship game. The Blugolds will play for third place at the first-ever WIAC Tournament on Saturday evening.
Jess Stiller (Fr. - Evergreen, Colo.) scored early in the first quarter to make it a 1-1 game, but the Tigers pulled away with eight consecutive goals from there. It gave Colorado College a 9-1 lead early in the second quarter.
Alexie Romanelli (Jr. - Naperville, Ill./Central) and Stiller scored again at that point to make it 10-3, but the Tigers scored the final four goals of the half to take a 14-3 lead into halftime.
Raegan Valois (So. - Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and
Devon Crews (So. - St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) both scored in the third period and
Paige Kiani (Fr. - New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) and Crews added two more goals in the fourth, but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Crews finished with four points on three goals and an assist. Stiller and Kiani added two points each.
Alexandria Shea (Jr. - Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) made six saves in goal for UW-Eau Claire.
The Blugolds held a 14-12 advantage in ground balls. The Tigers out-shot the Blugolds 41-18.
The Blugolds will face the loser of the other semifinal between UW-River Falls and UW-La Crosse in the third-place game on Friday in River Falls. Their semifinal is set for Friday night. Game time on Saturday is 5 p.m.
