JANESVILLE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team saw its standout season come to an end with a 5-4 defeat to UW-La Crosse in the semifinals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Team Tournament on Saturday at Premier Tennis and Fitness.
The Blugolds won twice in doubles and twice in singles, but the Eagles got the edge in the hard-fought dual.
Samantha Fuchs (Jr. - DeForest, Wis.) and
Anna Lee (So. - Buffalo, Minn.) took the No. 1 doubles match 8-5 and
Téa Armstrong (Jr. - Blue Earth, Minn.) and
Liv Herzog (So. - Owatonna, Minn.) won the No. 3 match 8-4. They helped give the Blugolds a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Lee won the No. 2 singles match 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 and
Sydney Presler (Sr. - Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) prevailed at No. 4 6-2, 6-0. However, the Eagles rallied with wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the dual and advance to the WIAC finals.
The Blugolds finished the year with a 13-7 record. They cracked the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings this season, marking their first appearance in the poll since 2003.
