EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team knocked off No. 10 UW-River Falls 3-0 on Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and added two more in the third to defeat a top-10 opponent in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Max Gutjahr (Jr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) stopped all 25 shots he faced to earn the shutout. He had 14 saves in the final period.
- Tyler Herzberg (So. - Germantown, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) scored the game-winner with just over a minute remaining in the second period. Assists came from Will Brenner (Fr. - Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) and Leo Bacallao (Jr. - Madison, Wis./Memorial).
- Max Dronen (Fr. - Moorhead, Minn.) doubled the Blugold lead with a goal midway through the third period. Dayne Hoyord (So. - Scandinavia, Wis./Stevens Point) assisted.
- Connor Szmul (Sr. - Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) capped the victory with an empty net goal in the closing moments. Herzberg assisted.
- The Blugolds outshot the Falcons 34-25.
- It was UW-Eau Claire's first win over a top-10 opponent since January of 2024, when the Blugolds defeated sixth-ranked St. Scholastica.
- It was the team's second consecutive shutout, coming one day after a 6-0 win over Northland.
