Third-period flurry sends Blugolds past Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team unleashed a five-goal flurry in the third period to defeat UW-Stevens Point 6-2 on Thursday in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. With the game tied 1-1 at the second intermission, the Blugolds left no doubt with their late onslaught.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ellie Anderson (Sr. – Fergus Falls, Minn.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Blugolds (6-3-0, 3-1-0). Four others also found the back of the net.
  • Anderson opened the scoring early in the second period off assists by McKenna Sandberg (So. – St. Michael, Minn./Rogers) and Keira Bolt (Jr. – Boise, Idaho). The Pointers answered 11 minutes later though, tying the game heading into the final period.
  • UW-Eau Claire blew things open in the final 20 minutes. Ashley Wagenbach (Fr. – Lakeville, Minn./North) scored on a power play early in the third period to break the tie before Ava Johansson (So. – Rogers, Minn.) doubled the lead with a goal four minutes later.
  • Samantha Bandholz (Sr. – Richfield, Wis./Slinger) struck on a power play with nine minutes remaining, making the score 4-1 in the Blugolds' favor. Anderson scored her second goal just over a minute later.
  • The Pointers pulled a goal back with six minutes left, but Rachel Mirwald (Jr. – Verona, Wis.) put the punctuation on the victory with another UW-Eau Claire goal in the final two minutes.
  • Kylie Wiltse (So. – Maplewood, Minn./Roseville) and Sam Moehle (Jr. – Farmington, Minn.) had two assists each. Tegan Swanson (Fr. – Eden Prairie, Minn.) had eight saves in net to earn the victory.
