Blugolds' win streak stopped by No. 19 Carnegie Mellon

BEREA, Ohio — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team's four-game win streak came to an end with a 71-48 defeat to No. 19 Carnegie Mellon on Sunday at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational. The Tartans used big second and fourth quarter pushes to get past the Blugolds, sending UW-Eau Claire to Monday's tournament consolation game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) scored nearly half of the Blugolds' points, but it wasn't enough for UW-Eau Claire (4-6) to pull an upset. Overskei had 21 points.
  • The Blugolds got off to a solid start against their ranked opponent, taking an early lead with a 6-2 run to open the game. The Tartans recovered and led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Carnegie Mellon (10-0) started to pull away in the second. The Tartans opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to open up a 10-point lead, and later rode a hot streak from beyond the arc to grow the advantage to 15. The Blugolds trailed 33-20 at halftime.
  • UW-Eau Claire trimmed the deficit to single digits when Overskei hit a 3-pointer with with 2:56 left in the third, making it a 40-31 game. The Blugolds never got any closer though, and the Tartans outscored them 26-17 in the fourth quarter to finish off the game.
  • Reanna Hutchinson (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) had eight points for the Blugolds. Jessilyn Ernst (So. - Pardeeville, Wis.) had six points and 10 rebounds.
  • UW-Eau Claire shot 33% from the field and 50% from the free throw line. Carnegie Mellon, meanwhile, shot 46% overall.
