EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team defeated No. 15 UW-Stevens Point 5-2 on Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds scored three unanswered goals in the third period to even up the season series between the two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) rivals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The score was tied 2-2 entering the third period before the Blugolds put three pucks in the back of the net to score their second win over a ranked opponent this season.
- Kade Peterson (So. - West Fargo, N.D./Northstar Christian Academy) gave UW-Eau Claire (5-6-1, 4-2-0) an early lead with a short-handed goal just 2:06 into the game.
- The Pointers answered with a power play goal a few minutes after Peterson's goal. The score remained 1-1 entering the first intermission.
- Kyler Grundy (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail) put the Blugolds in front with an unassisted goal around the midway mark of the second period. UW-Stevens Point (6-4-1, 3-2-1) answered again just a few minutes later to tie the game headed into the final period.
- With time running out in regulation, Peterson struck for the game-winning goal with just under three minutes left in the third period. It started a three-goal flurry for the Blugolds, which also saw Connor Szmul (Sr. - Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) score with 1:22 left on the clock and Dayne Hoyord (So. - Scandinavia, Wis./Stevens Point) add an empty net goal in the final 20 seconds.
- Peterson, Max Giblin (So. - Hudson, Wis.) and Max Dronen (Fr. - Moorhead, Minn.) all had an assist for UW-Eau Claire.
- Max Gutjahr (Jr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) had 24 saves for the Blugolds.
- It was UW-Eau Claire's first win over the Pointers since January of 2023.
