EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team dropped its season opener to St. Olaf 4-1 on Friday night at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds recovered from an early one-goal deficit, but the Oles scored three unanswered goals to close out the game and send UW-Eau Claire to defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Olaf scored the opener just under six minutes into the first period.
- The Blugolds found their answer midway through the second period. Max Dronen (Fr. - Moorhead, Minn.) scored his first career goal off assists from Ben Monson (So. - Savage, Minn./Lakeville North) and Charlie Erickson (So. - Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) with just under 11 minutes until the second intermission.
- St. Olaf responded two minutes later to take the lead for good. The Oles scored after 10:05 elapsed in the second period, and added a third goal in the final four minutes of the period. They closed out the scoring with a fourth goal on an empty net in the final two minutes of the game.
- Max Gutjahr (Jr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) made 14 saves in net for the Blugolds.
- The Blugolds outshot the Oles 45-18. UW-Eau Claire went 0 for 4 on the power play.

The Blugolds will look to get in the win column with another home game on Saturday, November 9. They host Bethel (Minn.) at 7 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Arena. The team will be hosting Youth Night.
