RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team fell in a top-10 clash to No. 1 UW-River Falls 5-0 on Saturday at Hunt Arena. The top-ranked Falcons broke a scoreless deadlock with three goals in the second period, and pulled away in the third to deal the 10th-ranked Blugolds their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defeat of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was scoreless entering the second period. Blugolds goalie Alexa Backmann (So. – Rogers, Minn.) made 11 saves in the first period to keep the defending national champions at bay.
- UW-River Falls (5-0) broke the tie in the first minute of the second period. The Falcons doubled their lead about 10 minutes later, and made it 3-0 with a goal in the final seven seconds of the period.
- Two quick strikes early in the third for UW-River Falls finished the scoring.
- Backmann finished with 21 saves.
- UW-Eau Claire (4-3) held a 27-26 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams went 0 for 2 on power plays.
- The Falcons took 26 faceoffs compared to 21 for the Blugolds.

The Blugolds will face another test against one of the top teams in NCAA Division III when they host No. 2 Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday, November 26. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Arena.
