MENOMONIE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team picked up its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory of the season with a 4-1 win over rival UW-Stout on Saturday at Fanetti Community Center.
Dayne Hoyord (So. - Scandinavia, Wis./Stevens Point) scored the first two goals of his Blugold career to help lift the team to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Stout got on the board first, striking in the final four minutes of the first period. The Blue Devils led 1-0 at the first intermission.
- UW-Eau Claire (2-3-1, 1-1-0) didn't need long to respond. Hoyord scored his first goal less than two minutes into the second period, turning in an assist from Kyler Grundy (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail).
- Trenten Heyde (Jr. - Atlanta, Ga./Grayson) gave the Blugolds the lead with a power play goal in the final second of the second period. With 0.2 seconds left on the clock, he scored off assists from Colin Stein (Sr. - Pewaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and Kade Peterson (So. - West Fargo, N.D./Northstar Christian Academy).
- Hoyord added an insurance goal early in the third period, assisted by Connor Szmul (Sr. - Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View), and Jordan Randall (Sr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) added an empty-net goal in the closing minute to ice the game away.
- Max Gutjahr (Jr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) stopped 13 shots in goal to pick up the victory.
- The Blugolds' penalty kill unit stopped all five Blue Devil power plays.
