SUPERIOR, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team dropped its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener 3-1 to UW-Superior on Friday at Siinto S. Wessman Arena. The Blugolds fell into a 2-0 hole and couldn't recover.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Superior (3-1-1, 1-0-0) got on the board in the early stages of the first period. The Yellowjackets then doubled their lead with a second goal in the first two and a half minutes of the second period.
- Tyler Herzberg (So. - Germantown, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) pulled one back for UW-Eau Claire midway through the second period. He scored off assists from Cade Lemmer (Jr. - Tomahawk, Wis./Wausau West) and Leo Bacallao (Jr. - Madison, Wis./Memorial).
- The Blugolds pushed for an equalizer late in regulation, but UW-Superior dashed their hopes of a comeback by scoring an empty net goal in the final minute and a half of regulation.
- Max Gutjahr (Jr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) made 22 saves in goal.
- Both teams went 0 for 4 on power plays.
- The Blugolds outshot the Yellowjackets 36-25.

UW-Eau Claire (1-3-1, 0-1-0) will look to bounce back when it visits UW-Stout for another WIAC game on Saturday, November 23. Game time is 7 p.m. at Fanetti Community Center in Menomonie.
