EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team got off to a strong start but couldn't hold off a surge from the College of Saint Benedict in a 69-63 defeat on Wednesday at the Sonnentag Event Center. The Blugolds opened the game with a 21-0 run, but the Bennies stormed back in the second half to eke out a victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first eight minutes of the game couldn't have gone much better for the Blugolds (0-4), who scored the first 21 points of the night and held the Bennies scoreless until the 1:56 mark of the first period. They limited the Bennies to 3 of 20 shooting from the field in the quarter.
- The Bennies started hitting more shots in the second quarter, but UW-Eau Claire still led by 17 at halftime. The Blugolds shot 50% in the first quarter and 53% in the second.
- Saint Benedict closed the third quarter with a 12-3 run to slash the deficit down to five at 50-45 entering the fourth period.
- The Bennies took their first lead of the game with a 3-pointer with 6:34 remaining in regulation. They never trailed again and outscored the Blugolds 24-13 across the entirety of the final quarter.
- Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) led UW-Eau Claire with 15 points. She also had six rebounds.
- Jessilyn Ernst (So. - Pardeeville, Wis.) had 11 points and nine rebounds. Reanna Hutchinson (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) added 10 points and six boards, while Kailey Tulachka (So. - Mishicot, Wis.) had 10 points and seven rebounds.
