MENOMONIE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team clinched the No. 3 seed for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament with a 1-0 victory over rival UW-Stout on Saturday. The win in their regular season finale ensured the Blugolds will open the postseason in the comforts of home.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johanna Thompson (Fr. - Green Bay, Wis./Preble) scored the game's only goal in the seventh minute. She knocked home a cross from the left side of the box off the foot of Haley Von Rentzell (Jr. - Chanhassen, Minn.) to put the Blugolds ahead for good.
- Bella Jones (So. - Neenah, Wis.) and Kennedy Boll (Sr. - Franklin, Wis.) teamed up to secure the Blugolds' third straight shutout, and eighth clean sheet overall. Both keepers played 45 minutes in net. Jones made five saves.
- UW-Eau Claire finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal and had six corner kicks to the Blue Devils' three.
- The Blugolds finished with a 3-1-3 mark in the WIAC, earning 12 points in the standings. That earned them the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament.
UP NEXT
The Blugolds will host sixth-seeded UW-Whitewater in the opening round of the WIAC Tournament (Presented by Culver's) on Tuesday, November 5. Game time is 7 p.m. at Simpson Field. The two teams tied 1-1 in their first meeting this season.
