ASHLAND, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team cruised past Northland College 11-0 in its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener on Friday at Bay Area Civic Center. The 11th-ranked Blugolds came one goal shy of matching the program record for most goals ever scored in a game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire (3-1-0, 1-0-0) scored five times in the first period and never looked back. The Blugolds added three more goals in the second period and another three in the third.
- Three players scored two goals apiece: Gretta Pioske (So. - Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka), Sadie Long (Sr. - Farmington, Minn.) and Kenzie Keller (So. - Mankato, Minn./East). Pioske's goals were her first in a Blugold uniform.
- Sam Moehle (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) tallied four points for the Blugolds, scoring one goal and assisting three others. Keller, Keira Bolt (Jr. - Boise, Idaho) and Maddie Hulter (So. - Fergus Falls, Minn.) added two assists apiece.
- In all, eight different Blugolds scored. Ella Hansen (Fr. - New Prague, Minn.) scored her first career goal. Samantha Bandholz (Sr. - Richfield, Wis./Slinger), Ellie Anderson (Sr. - Fergus Falls, Minn.) and Ava Webster (Jr. - Rosemount, Minn.) also got on the score sheet.
- Alexa Backmann (So. - Rogers, Minn.) stopped all eight shots she faced in net to earn the victory.
