EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team fell to UW-Platteville 3-0 in the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament (Presented by Culver's) on Tuesday at the Sonnentag Event Center. The fourth-seeded Blugolds battled in each set, but fell to the fifth-seeded Pioneers in their postseason opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Platteville won 25-18, 25-17, 25-23.
- The Pioneers pulled away in the later stages of each set to clinch the victory. UW-Eau Claire rallied from a 10-2 deficit in the opening set, scoring seven straight points to narrow the gap to one. However, UW-Platteville answered with a 6-1 run to re-establish its cushion and held on down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Pioneers turned a two-point lead into an eight-point advantage with an 8-3 run in the second set. It put the Blugolds behind 18-11, and they couldn't make up enough ground before UW-Platteville went ahead 2-0 entering the third set.
- UW-Eau Claire erased a six-point deficit in the final set, riding a 7-2 run late in the set to tie it at 22. UW-Platteville won three of the final four points though to seal its victory.
- Bailey Leeke (Jr. - Lakeville, Minn./North) and Mya Cinnamo (So. - Rosemount, Minn.) hit 11 kills apiece for UW-Eau Claire. Abby Stanwood (Jr. - Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) added nine kills.
- Ella Kiebel (Jr. - Maple Lake, Minn.) tallied 33 assists. Stanwood had a team-high 20 digs, and Leeke added 15.
- The Pioneers hit at a .265 percentage, compared to .167 for the Blugolds.
UP NEXT
UW-Eau Claire will wait until the NCAA Tournament field is revealed to learn if the team is postseason-bound. The NCAA Tournament is scheduled to begin next week.
