MADISON, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team is in contention after the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. All five of the Blugolds' singles players that were in action won their opening matches, while all three of UW-Eau Claire's doubles teams will play for third place on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds had a strong day in the singles brackets. All five of the players in action won in straight sets and will play in the semifinals of their respective flights on Sunday.
- Samantha Fuchs (Sr. - DeForest, Wis.), the No. 2 seed at No. 1 singles, won 6-0, 6-1. Third-seeded Morgan Dekan (Sr. - Altoona, Wis.) won her opener 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 flight. Liv Herzog (Jr. - Owatonna, Minn.), the No. 3 seed at No. 4 singles, won 6-1, 6-1. Second-seeded Reese Burton (Fr. - Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Téa Armstrong (Sr. - Blue Earth, Minn.) made the Blugolds 5-0 on the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. Anna Lee (Jr. - Buffalo, Minn.) is the top seed at No. 2 singles and received a bye into the semis.
- The No. 1 doubles team of Fuchs and Lee won in the first round, but fell 8-6 in the semifinals. They will play for third place against a UW-Stevens Point duo on Sunday.
- Dekan and Herzog also won their opener at No. 2 doubles, but fell 8-5 in the semis. They'll play a team from UW-Oshkosh for third place on Day 2.
- Armstrong and Aubrey Wittwer (Fr. - Delano, Minn.) won their No. 3 doubles opener 8-0, but fell 8-3 in the semifinals. They take on a team from UW-Stevens Point for third place on Sunday.
UP NEXT
Play resumes at 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 27. The final doubles matches will be contended, along with the singles semifinals, finals and placement matches.
