ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's cross country team had a standout day at the Augustana Interregional Invitational on Saturday, placing fourth out of 40 teams. In a field that featured three of the top five teams in Division III, the Blugolds placed ahead of several nationally ranked squads. The Blugolds have placed in the top four in all three of their meets this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds finished with 166 team points. Second-ranked Wartburg College won the meet with 41 points. The other two teams UW-Eau Claire finished behind – No. 5 North Central and No. 4 UW-Whitewater – were also top-five teams in the country.
- UW-Eau Claire, ranked No. 27, finished ahead of four other ranked squads.
- Mason Shea (Sr. – River Falls, Wis.) crossed the finish line first for UW-Eau Claire, placing 14th with a time of 24:36.9. It was a new personal best for the reigning All-American.
- Jack Hesse-Withbroe (Jr. – Stillwater, Minn.) and Trevor LaMirande (Sr. – Dresser, Wis./St. Croix Falls) both set personal records as well. Hesse-Withbroe finished in 31st overall with a time of 24:59.4, while LaMirande placed 34th in 25:05.4.
- Sam Verkerke (Sr. – White Bear Lake, Minn.) took 48th overall, finishing in 25:15.6 — a new season best.
- Jesse Peterson (Sr. – St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) rounded out the Blugold scorers, finishing 54th at 25:22.7 — a new PR.
UP NEXT
The Blugolds will be back in action on Saturday, November 2, at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships. UW-Eau Claire took sixth place at last year's WIAC meet.
