SAINT PAUL, Minn. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer continued their stretch of road games on Wednesday evening as they took on the Scots of Macalester College. The Blugolds controlled the pace and possession for much of the game but could not find the back of the net as they drew with Macalester, 0-0.
The first half showcased the power of Eau Claire's offense early as the Blugolds recorded ten shots in the opening frame. The defense complemented the play on the back end allowing only two shots on target in the first 45 minutes of play.
Nathan Donovan (Jr. – Hazel Green, Wis./Wahlert Catholic) led the team in the first half with four shot attempts as the Blugolds pushed to find the first tally of the night.
Carter Thiesfeld (Jr. – Forest Lake, Minn.),
Owen Williams (So. – Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH), and
Alek Laroi (Fr. – Grayslake, Wis./Libertyville) all had one shot on target each in the first half.
After halftime, Eau Claire continued their pressure while keeping a solid hold with the defense as they only allowed one shot in the final 45 minutes of play. A late set piece by Eau Claire found a scoring opportunity for
Ethan Andersen (Sr. – Burnsville, Minn.) as he connected with a shot in from close with his head, but the ball found its way into the goalkeeper's reach and out of the net. Neither side found the edge before the final whistle as the teams settled for a 0-0 draw.
Mark Belknap (Jr. – Anoka, Minn.) stopped all three shots he faced during the contest and holds a season record of 0-0-2.
The Blugolds (1-0-2) will head to Illinois later in the week for their final game of the opening road trip. UW-Eau Claire will face off with #1 University of Chicago on Saturday, September 9
th. Kickoff from Stagg Field is scheduled for 2p.m.
