EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team grabbed an early lead, but ultimately fell to Simpson College 3-1 on Wednesday at Simpson Field. The clash between two regionally ranked teams saw the Storm pull away in the second half.
UW-Eau Claire, ranked No. 6 in Region IX, got out to a 1-0 lead over the second-ranked Storm when
Sydney Spencer (Sr. - Hudson, Wis.) struck for a goal in the 37th minute. It came off an assist from
Katlyn Byhre (Jr. - St. Michael, Minn./Rogers), who sent a towering pass toward the goal from midfield. It took a high hop, and Spencer lashed it off the bounce and into the back of the net.
The Storm had a response early in the second half though, scoring the equalizer in the 49th minute. They later took the lead on a successful penalty kick in the 69th minute, and added an insurance goal in the 81st minute.
Each team registered 10 shots on goal.
Kennedy Boll (Jr. - Franklin, Wis.) made seven saves in net for UW-Eau Claire.
The Blugolds will look to bounce back in their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 30. They host UW-Whitewater at Simpson Field, with kickoff set for 2 p.m.
