WHITEWATER, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team tied for fourth place at the Warhawk Invitational to open its season on Saturday. The Blugolds had three individuals take third place in their flights.
UW-Eau Claire tallied 28 team points to tie for fourth with UW-La Crosse. Nine teams competed at the invitational hosted by UW-Whitewater.
Samantha Fuchs (Jr. - DeForest, Wis.) took third place at No. 1 singles for the Blugolds. She advanced to the semifinals before falling to the eventual champion from UW-Whitewater. Fuchs won the third-place match by default.
Sydney Presler (Sr. - Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) placed third at No. 2 singles. She won her opening match 6-2, 6-0 over Ella Nguyen of UW-Oshkosh before falling in the semifinals. She rallied with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Luther's Abby Struble in the third-place match.
The duo of
Clare Palen (Sr. - Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) and
Morgan Dekan (Jr. - Altoona, Wis.) placed third in the top doubles flight. They blanked a team from Carthage 8-0 in their opener and fell 8-4 in the semifinals. They edged a UW-La Crosse duo 8-5 in the third-place match.
Téa Armstrong (Jr. - Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area) and
Mary Shogren (Sr. - Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) teamed up to take fourth place in No. 3 doubles. The won their opening match 8-5 to reach the semifinals before dropping their next two to place fourth.
Liv Herzog (So. - Owatonna, Minn.) finished fifth in No. 3 singles. She lost her opening match in three sets, but rallied with two wins to close out her day. She won 8-0 in the consolation semifinals and 8-2 in the fifth-place match.
Julia Huseth (Fr. - Verona, Wis.) and
Addy Farber (Fr. - Ham Lake, Minn./Andover) took eighth place at No. 2 doubles for the Blugolds after coming up just short in a few competitive matches.
The Blugolds begin their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season with a dual against UW-River Falls on Saturday, Sept. 9, in Eau Claire. It's set to begin at 4 p.m.
