ASHLAND, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team used a standout defensive effort to defeat Northland College 79-43 on Saturday at Kendrigan Gymnasium. The Blugolds limited the Lumberjacks to 12 points in the first half to earn a third straight win.
UW-Eau Claire (4-3) held Northland (0-7) to 27% shooting from the field. The Blugolds out-rebounded the Lumberjacks 48-32 and forced 11 turnovers in a strong effort from start to finish.
The Blugolds didn't allow the Lumberjacks to reach double figures on the scoreboard until nearly 18 minutes had passed. The Blugolds scored 33 of the game's first 41 points. They opened the game on a 28-6 run and didn't look back. UW-Eau Claire was ahead 35-12 at halftime.
The lead continued to grow in the second half, where the Blugolds outscored the Lumberjacks 44-31. Their lead grew as high as 37 in a dominant performance from start to finish.
Drew Maloney (Jr. - St. Charles, Minn.) led UW-Eau Claire with 13 points. He also had six rebounds.
Michael Casper (Sr. - Merrill, Wis.) scored 12 points and had six boards.
Cade Hall (Sr. - Mauston, Wis.) and
Gunnar Tebon (Sr. - Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) scored 10 each. The Blugolds shot 50% from the field and got 34 points from their bench.
The Blugolds will return to action on Wednesday, December 6, with a visit to Wartburg. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
