Women's Tennis Earns Two Wins

Green Bay, WI (Blugolds.com)- The University of Eau Claire women's tennis team opened up their spring season with two wins on March 2. The Blugolds earned a 9-0 sweep over St. Norbert College and edged out Edgewood College 5-4.

In their dual with St. Norbert the Blugolds did not drop a set to earn a 9-0 sweep. Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, MN) and Emily Cooper  (White Bear, Minn.) got their spring off to a winnig start with 8-1 victory at number one doubles. Hanna Zevenbergen (Baldwin,Wis./ Baldwin-Woodville) and Molly Stewart (Amery, WI) didn't miss a beat following with a 8-6 triumph at number two doubles. Lindsey Henderson (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Alexa Brooks (Beaver Dam, Wis.) paired up to finish the doubles sweep with a 8-2 win at number three doubles. The Blugolds continued their dominance into singles play. Wijesinghe earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Paulson (SNC) at number one singles. Cooper took down the number two singles player 6-1, 6-2, while Stewart won 6-2, 6-0 at the three singles slot. Zevenbergen and Henderson were victorious at the number four and five slots, and Emma Barnd (Wells, Minn/ United South Central) finished the sweep with a win at number six singles. 

 

The second match of the day tested the Blugolds who were down 2-1 after doubles play. Natalie Wijesinghe  and Emily Cooper  earned the only doubles point at number one doubles. The pair defeated Verbauwhede/Carew (EC) 8-4. The Blugolds turned the table in singles action winning four of six singles matches. Wijesinghe led the way with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number one singles. Cooper gave the Blugolds the edge with a 6-0, 6-2 win at number two singles. Stewart made quick work of Picard (EC) at the three slot and Henderson sealed the win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number five sinlges. 

The Blugolds improve to 8-1 and have not lost since their very first match in August against UW-Whitewater. The Eau Claire women will compete March 9 at Gustavus Adolphus at 9:00am.
