Women's Tennis Dominates Scholastica & River Falls

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team was hot on a cold and rainy day as the Blugolds sweep both St. Scholastica and UW-River Falls, 9-0 on Sunday.

The number one doubles team of Maddie Johnson (Sr.-Lakeville, MN/South) and Madison Rossebo (Sr.-Minnetonka, MN) set the tone for Blugolds in their morning match with St. Scholastica, winning by a score of 8-1. Colleen McCullough (Jr.-Maple Grove, MN/Osseo) and Sarah Henderson (Fr.-Prior Lake, MN) followed with an 8-4 win at number two doubles while Renee Nelson (Sr.-Madison, WI/La Follette) and Paige Kuepers (Jr.-Green Bay, WI/Southwest) recorded an 8-1 victory.

In singles play, Johnson held off Alexis Gunderson in number one singles, winning 6-1, 1-6, 10-4. Rossebo also went to three sets to secure a victory at two singles, defeating Madeleine Scanlan 7-6, 5-7, 10-8.

McCullough handled Daniela Rojas at number three, recording scores of 6-0, 6-3. At the number four singles slot, Henderson cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sarah Coryell.

Kuepers and Olivia Gallagher (So.-Lodi, WI) completed the sweep, earning wins of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 at number five and six singles, respectively.

In their second match of the day, the Blugolds picked up where they left off, with Johnson and Rossebo dominating Hochberger/Ebensperger, 8-0. McCullough and Henderson took down Mendel and Deering, 8-1.  Kuepers and Nelson also cruised to a quick victory, winning 8-0 over Zuern and Johnson.

Johnson and Rossebo faced off against Hochberger and Ebensperger again in singles, with Johnson defeating Hochberger, 6-4, 6-2 and Rossebo defeating Ebensperger, 6-1, 6-0.

McCullough keep the Blugold rally going, turning in scores of 6-2, 6-2 over Mendel. Henderson earned the win over Deering, winning by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Kuepers and Zuern squared off at number five singles, with Kuepers coming away with the 6-2, 6-1 win.

Gallagher completed the sweep, defeating Johnson 6-1, 6-2.

The Blugolds (14-4) will next compete in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament on April 25.
