Men's Basketball has Tough Time in Overtime; Suffers Loss

Box Score

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Playing in its first overtime contest in Zorn Arena since December 28, 2007, the UW-Eau Claire men's basketball team came up short to UW-Superior 89-79 tonight.

After getting down by 18 points early in the second half after Superior used a 19-3 run to open the half, the Blugolds stayed strong to force the game into overtime. The Yellowjackets helped themselves early in the second period as they did not miss a shot for more than the first six minutes.

From the 14:51 mark to 4:55, the Blugolds outscored Superior 33-13 to take the lead for the first time since late in the first half. Colin Boone (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) nailed a three-pointer to put the Blugolds up by one, but the teams would once again battle back and forth, much like they did in the first half, until they found themselves even at 71-71, the 11th tie of the game.

The Blugolds had a tough time getting their offense going in the overtime, as they went 3-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-5 from the free throw line. Superior went 4-for-6 from the floor and 9-for-12 from the charity stripe in the 10-point win.

Eau Claire hit nine three-pointers in the game, six in the second half alone, tying for the third most in a game this season.

The Blugolds had foul trouble tonight, tying for a season-high with 24, which led to 19 points for the Yellowjackets. The Blugolds managed 12 points from the line as Superior committed 14 fouls.

Three Blugolds reached double figures in scoring with Amadou Fofana (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./West) leading the way with 18 points. Boone added 16 while Jordan Kappen (Sr.-Blair, Wis./Blair-Taylor) had 12. Superior's Jake Smith led the game with 31 points.

Rebounding, Josh Prince (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chi-Hi) finished with a team-high eight while two Yellowjackets reached double figures as Superior had a total of 44 to the Blugolds' 31.

Superior improves to 7-8 in WIAC play and 14-10 overall while the Blugolds drop to 14-10 on the season and 6-9 in the WIAC.

The Blugolds will head to Menomonie on Saturday for their final regular-season game. Tip-off against UW-Stout is set for 5 p.m.
