Box Score EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - With nearly identical scores in three sets, the 19th-ranked UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team beat UW-Superior 3-0 at the McPhee Physical Education Center tonight.
The Blugolds won with scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-16 to improve to 19-5 overall and 5-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), finishing the 2009 season tied for third place. The Yellowjackets fall to 9-14 on the season and 1-7 in the conference.
While the beginning of sets one and three remained close, the Blugolds were able to turn up the pressure later on to win by eight and nine points. The Blugolds controlled the majority of the second set after jumping out to an early 9-1 lead.
As a team, the Blugolds hit .286 to Superior's .132. The Blugolds finished with eight blocks while the Yellowjackets had none.
On the night, Superior recorded 24 kills while Eau Claire had 43, a match-high of 15 coming from Emily Zupon (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.). Blair Murphy (Jr.-Hermantown, Minn.) added eight.
Lindsey Smith (Sr.-Maple Lake, Minn.) led the match with 22 digs while Zupon added 11 and Murphy finished with 10. Audra Stevenson led Superior with eight.
Leading the match in assists was Emily Neave (Fr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) with 21. Amanda Lessner (Jr.-Watertown, Wis.) finished with 15.
Eau Claire will now host the Blugold Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Eau Claire will be in action at 5:15 p.m. with a match against Viterbo University.
