Men's Cross Country Finishes Sixth At NCAA Regional

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The UW-Eau Claire men's cross country team took sixth place out of 39 teams today at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals today at Saukie Golf Course.

Eau Claire scored 200 points today, while North Central (Ill.) finished with 51 to take the top spot. La Crosse finished second with 64 and Stevens Point took third with 83. Oshkosh ended the regional with 134 points for a fourth place finish and Augustana took fifth with 182.

Chris Wirtz (Jr.-Weston, Wis./DC Everest) led Eau Claire today with a 19th place finish in a time of 25:17 on the 8K course. Brent Kann (Jr.-Rice Lake, Wis.) came in next with a time of 25:37.8 for a 35th place spot, followed closely by Jules Miller (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./East), who finished 38th in a time of 25:42. Tom Breitbach (So.-Muskego, Wis.) came in 14 seconds later to take 45th with a time of 25:56.3 and Ben Pearson (Jr.-Clinton, Wis.) finished the course in 26:17.8 for 63rd place.

The finish for Eau Claire today was a big improvement over last season, as the Blugolds finished in 16th place out of 35 teams. Wirtz was also last year's highest finisher, but he took 63rd place overall.
