Box Score EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team aimed to stay perfect in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play tonight, and was successful in its efforts, beating UW-Stevens Point in four sets at the McPhee Physical Education Center.
With the victory, the Blugolds improve to 14-9 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The loss drops Stevens Point to 12-18 on the season, and 1-6 in the WIAC.
Stevens Point struck first in the match, winning the opening set by a score of 25-23. The victory was short-lived for the Pointers, and Eau Claire rallied to take the next three sets and secure the match with scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-17.
Three Blugolds reached double-digits in kills, with Abby Freiborg (Sr.-Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West) recording a match-high 14 kills. Katie Fox (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chi-Hi) and Rachel Ver Voort (So.-Madison, Wis./Middleton) had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Freiborg and Lindsey Smith (Jr.-Maple Lake, Minn.) led the balanced team effort, each recording five service aces and 10 digs. Emily Haese (Sr.-Mishicot, Wis.) also contributed 10 digs and tallied a match-high 38 assists. Eau Claire managed a total of 15 services aces for the match.
Jennifer Rueter led Stevens Point with nine kills, and Amanda Mix tallied 22 digs.
The Blugolds return to action in their last home match of the regular season tomorrow afternoon against WIAC rival UW-Whitewater. If the Blugolds prevail, they will clinch at least a share of the WIAC regular season crown and earn the number one seed in the conference tournament. The match is set to begin at noon.
