RIVER FALLS, Wis. - UW-Eau Claire women's basketball player Michelle Burns (Sr. -Eau Claire, Wis./North) reached 1,000-points for her career in today's 79-60 victory over UW-River Falls at the Karges Center.

Heading into the game, Burns had 993 points and reached 1,000 midway through the second period. With the 18 points she scored against the Falcons today, Burns now has 1,011, 13th on the Blugolds' all-time scoring list. Arlene Meinholz, who played from 1991-95, tops the list with 1,834 points.

The Blugolds remain unbeaten in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with a 7-0 record. They are also 13-3 overall. The Falcons fall to 6-10 overall and 0-7 in the WIAC.

River Falls got on the board first today and did not let the Blugolds lead for almost the first six minutes of the game. Missy Fremstad (Jr.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) tied the game up twice with two three-pointers before hitting another one to put the Blugolds ahead for the first time. They would never trail the rest of the way and would get up by as much as 14 points in the first half. Burns hit two free throws near the end of the first period, her 998th and 999th points, to help Eau Claire take an 11-point lead into halftime.

In the second, the Falcons got to within eight, hitting a three-pointer to open the period. That was the closest River Falls would get, however. The Blugolds were able to stay up by a good margin almost the rest of the way, but River Falls did its best to stay in the game, as it closed the gap to nine with just under nine minutes to play. Eau Claire was able to finish strong and overpower the Falcons in the 19-point victory.

While the Falcons outshot the Blugolds 40.8 percent-to-39.6 percent from the field, Eau Claire fared better in almost every other category. From the stripe, the Blugolds were an impressive 27-for-30 (90.0 percent) compared to the Falcons' 57.1 percent. Eau Claire also outrebounded the Falcons 40-to-31 and turned the ball over only 10 times to River Falls' 17.

Burns led the way for the Blugolds with a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. She was also 12-for-13 from the free throw line. Heather Witt (Jr.-Kendall, Wis./Royal) also scored 18 points and had a game-high four steals. Three other Blugolds reached double figures as well. Heidi Arciszewski (Jr.-Thorp, Wis.) contributed 13 points while Fremstad and Rachel Mueggenborg (Sr.-West Salem, Wis.) both added 11.

For the Falcons, four players reached double-digit point totals. Krystal Parr scored a team-high 16 points, Jenna Hanson added 12, and Sarah Schoeneck and Caitlin Hunstock both contributed 13. Schoeneck also led the team with five rebounds.

The Blugolds be back at home this Wednesday when UW-Stevens Point comes to town. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
