MINNEAPOLIS - The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team won 3-0 over Lawrence University in the first match before losing in five games to hometown Augsburg College (MN).

The first match saw 30-13, 30-20, and 30-22 scores as the Blugolds held the Vikings to negative marks in hitting percentage. They went -.091, -.389, and -.057 while Eau Claire hit .194, .042, and .163.

Emily Haese (Jr.-Mishicot) and Amanda Lessner (Fr.-Watertown) led the way in assists with 17 and 12, respectively. The kills were evenly spread, with Abby Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) and her nine total on top. Jenna Weber (Jr.-Antigo) was right behind her with eight. Freiborg also shined on defense, totaling 10 digs behind Heather Harnell (Sr.-Minnetonka, MN) and her 14.

The second match of the day saw a lot more drama. The scores in that contest were 29-31, 30-26, 20-30, 30-27, and 13-15.

The Blugolds had 13 kills in the first game and hit .170 in the tough loss. They notched it up to 17 kills and a .185 percentage in the 30-26 game. However, they had 10 errors to 11 kills in the middle game while hitting .023. They forced the fifth game with a 15-kill performance while hitting .148. The team hit .240 in the final game, but fell by two points.

Freiborg and Lissa Martinez (Sr.-Vadnais Height, MN/White Bear Lake) both led with 15 kills and Katie Fox (Jr.-Chippewa Falls/Chi-Hi) had 13 throughout the match. Haese's 58 assists led for Eau Claire while seven Blugolds had double-digit digs. Harnell's 40 easily led the way as they put up 135 to Augsburg's 78.

The home team blocked 9.5 to 4.0 from Eau Claire as the Blugolds went to 4-2 on the year.

The tourney will wrap up tomorrow with two games. The first will be against Northwestern College (MN) at 9 a.m. and the day's action will determine the second game's time and opponent.
