Men's Cross Country Finishes Sixth At WIAC Championship

WINNECONNE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's cross country team finished in sixth place out of nine teams today at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by UW-Oshkosh

Last season, the Blugolds also finished in sixth place at the event, while La Crosse captured the conference crown with 40 points. This is La Crosse's fourth consecutive title and has also won it seven times in the past 10 years. UW-Stevens Point and UW-Platteville tied for second place with 65 points, while UW-Whitewater finished in fourth place with 139. Oshkosh finished in fifth place with 150 points, followed by the Blugolds with 177. UW-Stout scored 189 for seventh place, UW-Superior took eighth with 204 points and River Falls finished last with 219.

UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl was the top finisher of the day. He finished with a time of 24:12 in the 8K race. Sigl, who also won the race in 2005 and 2006, is only the fourth person is WIAC Championship history to ever claim three or more titles.

For the Blugolds individually, Chris Wirtz (So-Weston, Wis./DC Everest) had the top time, finishing in 29th place overall with a time of 26:02. Kevin Hall (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble), who was the highest Blugold finisher last season, completed the race with a time of 26:07 in 35th place. Tony Carr (Jr.-Menomonie, Wis.) was the next Blugold finisher. He finished in 44th place with a time of 26:27, while Max Renner (So.-Green Bay, Wis./East) finished in 54th place with a time of 26:58. Mark Sanders (Jr.-Hammond, Wis./St. Croix) was the final point-scorer for the Blugolds, though Andy Warren (Jr.-Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) finished less than a half of a second behind him. Sanders finished in 58th place with a time of 27:07.

The Blugolds will have a week off before heading back to Winneconne, Wis. on Saturday, November 10 for the NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by UW-Oshkosh. Last season, the Blugolds finished the event in 13th place.
