Box Score LA CROSSE - The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team clinched a tie for the regular season conference title today by sweeping UW-La Crosse 3-0.
The sixth-ranked Blugolds are now 7-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and 22-2 overall. La Crosse is 4-3 and 18-7.
Both UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater are 6-1 in the WIAC behind Eau Claire. The one remaining conference match for both is against each other. The Blugolds have no more WIAC matches, so the October 25th showdown between the Warhawks and Titans will determine the other co-champion.
Scores for today's WIAC contest were 30-22, 30-20, and 30-19. Eau Claire posted kill totals of 15, 17, and 15 with .217 as the best attack percentage in the match. La Crosse's best attack percentage was .104 in game one and it fell to .000 and -.024 in the last two games.
A day after she tied the school record for kills in a game with 29, Jodi Dunbar (Sr.-Platteville) again led Eau Claire in kills. She had 14 while Abby Freiborg (So.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) and Jessica Groh (Sr.-Eau Claire/North) collected 11 each.
The team as a whole had 47 kills compared to 27 for the Eagles. The attack percentage went .161 to .031 in favor of Eau Claire. Carly Freiborg (Sr.-Sacred Heart/Renville County West) contributed 28 assists and the team had 45 over the Eagle 25. Eau Claire had seven aces and five errors with numbers of one and six for La Crosse.
Defensively, Shanna Berger (Sr.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) tallied 17 digs while Abby Freiborg had 15 and Carly Freiborg had 12. Groh led in blocks with nine and the team put together 12 over the La Crosse seven.
Eau Claire will enter the UW-River Falls Halloween Tournament as its last event before the WIAC tournament. The River Falls tourney will occur next Friday and Saturday.
