Box Score 2 EAU CLAIRE - The Eau Claire volleyball team finished the Siegenthaler Memorial Tournament today by defeating UW-Steven's Point and UW-River Falls, giving them a tie for first with Millikin University.
The Blugolds won the first match with sets of 30-26, 30-22, and 30-28. Also, the defense held up as the Pointers were held to under .200 in the hitting percentage category for all three sets.
Jenny Wolter (Sr.-Osceola) and Jodi Dunbar (Jr.-Platteville) came up big with 15 kills apiece to lead both teams. Carly Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) added 49 assists as the team overcame Stout.
In the final match of the tournament Eau Claire swept River Falls 30-20, 30-17, and 30-28. They hit well as they had percentages above .333 in each set.
Wolter had the most kills for Eau Claire with 16 but Molly Menard (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) was right on her tail with 15. Freiborg added 48 assists for the Blugolds and led with 17 digs. Shanna Berger (Jr.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) contributed 16 digs to the stellar defensive effort.
Eau Claire finished the tourney 3-1, tied for first with Millikin. River Falls was second with a 2-2 tournament. UW-Stout and Stevens Point were last with 1-3 records, though Stevens Point did defeat Millikin in five games.
Three Blugolds made the All-Tournament team. They include Dunbar, Menard, and Wolter. Also on the team were Rachel Cook, Jamie Florey and Katie Crumley of Millikin, Andrea Geehan of River Falls, Linda Meyer of Stout, and Lori Marten of Stevens Point. The Siegenthaler Award went to none other than Jenny Wolter for her performance this tournament.
Eau Claire is now 14-2 on the year and will next face WIAC opponent UW-Platteville here at home next Friday at 7:00 p.m.
