Box Score 2 RIVER FALLS - The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team ended the UW-River Falls Trick or Treat Tournament as the only unbeaten team of the event as it defeated Northwestern College and River Falls today at the Karges Center.
It took four games of 30-18, 30-22, 26-30, and 30-17 for the Blugolds to conquer Northwestern. The squad then went on to sweep the home team 30-20, 30-19, and 30-25.
The Blugold defense held Northwestern to under .300, while the Eau Claire attack ranged from .136 to .458. The second match of the day was more one-sided as River Falls never hit above .150 and Eau Claire hit below .300 in all three games.
Molly Menard (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) and Jenny Wolter (Sr.-Osceola) matched each other in kills with 16 to lead both teams in the first match. Fourty-four assists from Carly Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) also led. Shanna Berger (Jr.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) had five aces. The defense came up strong, with Carly Freiborg also adding 15 digs. Berger had 14 of her own as both teams posted 50 digs. Eau Claire had 14.5 blocks to Northwestern's 14.0. Wolter had 6 blocking assists with Ashley Danielson (Jr.-Cadott) totaling five.
Twelve kills from Menard was the tops for Eau Claire in match two. Carly Freiborg's 31 assists was the most for either team. Abby Freiborg (Fr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) compiled eight digs to lead in this match.
Eau Claire went 4-0 on the tourney. Bethel College, River Falls, and the University of St. Thomas all had a 2-2 weekend. UW-Stout and Northwestern both had a 1-3 tournament.
Two Blugolds were selected for the All-Tournament Team. They are Menard and Wolter. For the opponents there includes Rachelle Dosch of St. Thomas, Katie Snyder of Bethel, Katie Thompson of River Falls, Natalie Naaktgeboren of Stout, and Lindsey Sir of Northwestern.
This is the last regular season event for Eau Claire. On the season, the team put together a 26-3 record overall and went 6-2 in the WIAC. They will host Stout on Tuesday in its first playoff game. It is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the McPhee Physical Education Building.
