Box Score EAU CLAIRE - For the second consecutive day the UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team defeated a conference opponent in five games, defeating UW-Stevens Point 3-2 here today at the McPhee Physical Education.
Eau Claire improves to 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action while Stevens Point falls to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in WIAC play.
The Blugolds came out strong, hitting .442 in the first game to top the Pointers 30-23. Despite hitting just .148 in the second game, Eau Claire nearly took a 2-0 lead but eventually dropped the game 31-33. The team rebounded to with the third game 30-26 but hit just .129 in the fourth game in falling 20-30. The Blugolds stepped up big when it mattered most, winning 15-9 and hitting .421 in the fifth and deciding game to take the match 3-2.
Becca Carstensen (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) had a huge match as she totaled 24 kills with just five errors for a .463 kill percentage. The senior Blugold also tallied seven blocks at the net.
Molly Menard (Jr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) also had a big day as she pounded 20 kills in the victory. She finished the day with a kill percentage of .312 while also recording seven digs. Jenny Wolter (Jr.-Osceola) contributed 18 kills and a .467 hitting percentage in the victory.
Carly Freiborg (So.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) tallied 68 set assists in the match. The total ties her for the seventh most in school history in one match. Freiborg also recorded 16 digs in the match.
The Blugolds will look to keep their hot streak going on Tuesday when they head to Superior to battle the Yellowjackets in another WIAC match up. The action gets started at 7:00 p.m.
