Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS - The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team improved its undefeated record to 4-0 with back-to-back wins over St. Scholastica and host Augsburg here today at the Augsburg Tournament.
The Blugolds start the season 4-0 for the third consecutive year. St. Scholastica suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Eau Claire and fell to 4-1 at the completion of the match. Augsburg falls to 0-2 on the season after losing earlier in the day to Macalester 3-0.
Eau Claire wasted little time taking care of undefeated St. Scholastica as the Blugolds took the match in three straight games. The first game proved to be the closest between the two teams but Eau Claire eventually won 31-29. The Blugolds took the next two games in convincing fashion by scores of 30-22 and 30-24.
Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt (Sr.-Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) led the Blugolds in kills with 16 while Annie Kabat (Sr.-Greenleaf/Wrightstown) totaled 13 kills in the victory. Newcomer Carly Frieborg (Fr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) had a big day as she totaled 24 assists in the three games while also blocking three balls. Amy Olson (So.-Plymouth, MN/Maple Grove), sharing the role of setter, chipped in 22 assists while Becca Carstensen (Jr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) and Jess Menzel (Sr.Jr.-Green Bay/Preble) each totaled four service aces.
In the Blugolds second match of the day it took them just four games to dispose of host Augsburg as they won 30-18, 30-14, 22-30, and 30-14. Wozniak again led the Blugolds with 14 kills while Lindsay Anderson (Jr.-Deephaven, MN/Hopkins) also toaled 14. Carstensen chipped in 11 kills while Amy Olson totaled 32 assists in the victory. Annie Kabat powered the Blugolds serving as she piled up six service aces.
The Blugolds will continue play in the Augsburg Tournament tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. against Macalester. The teams with the two best records will go on to play in the championship match at 3:00 p.m. The third place match will also be held at 3:00 p.m. while the fifth and seventh place matches will be held at 1:00 p.m.
