Blugolds Take Down Pioneers In Five Games

The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team opened up the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season by defeating UW-Platteville 3-2 here tonight at the McPhee Phy. Ed. Center.

The Blugolds opened up the match with a 30-23 win in the first game. An ugly second game ensued in which Eau Claire had .000 hitting percentage but Platteville was even worse with a -.057 hitting percentage. The Blugolds held off the Pioneers in the second game to win 30-25.

Eau Claire struggled in the next two games losing the third game 30-25 and the fourth game 30-22.

The Blugolds weren't to be denied victory dominating the fifth and final game winning 15-4. The win improved Eau Claire's record to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in WIAC play.

Becca Carstensen (Jr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) led the Blugold attack with 16 kills and only three errors for a .406 hitting percentage. Carstensen also matched teammate Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt's (Sr.-Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) school record with 10 block assists.

Amy Olson (So.-Plymouth, MN/Maple Grove) led Eau Claire in assists with 27 followed up by Carly Freiborg (Fr.-Sacred Heart, MN) with 24. Annie Kabat (Sr.-Greenleaf/Wrightstown) and Missy Malvitz (Jr.-Elkhorn) led the Blugolds in digs with 15 a piece.

The Blugolds will be in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on UW-La Crosse at the McPhee Phy. Ed. Center. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
