Box Score 2 DULUTH, Minn. - The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team lost just one game in four matches en route to winning first place at the CSS/Peak Bagel Tourney here today at the College of St. Scholastica.
The Blugolds record improves to 8-2 overall. Eau Claire defeated UW-Superior, St. Katherine, Crown College, and St. Scholatica en route to the first place finish.
The action started Friday night with the Blugolds defeating Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent UW-Superior 3-0 with game scores of 30-23, 30-16, and 30-18. Annie Kabat (Sr.-Greenleaf/Wrightstown) and Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt (Sr.-Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) led the way with 10 and nine kills respectively. Becca Carstensen (Jr.-Eau Claire Memorial) and Molly Menard (So.-Eau Claire/Memorial) each totaled five blocks while Missy Malvitz (Sr./Jr.-Elkhorn) tallied 20 digs.
The Blugolds second match of the tourney was again a 3-0 victory, this time coming against St. Katherine by scores of 30-18, 30-17, and 30-14. Wozniak-Schmidt racked up 14 kills and compiled a kill percentage of .619 while Carstensen added 10 kills and six blocks in the victory.
Eau Claire kept its momentum going in the third match of the tournament as they topped Crown College in straight games 30-9, 30-12, and 30-19. Kabat led all Blugolds in kills with 10 while Wozniak-Schmidt added eight and Carstensen totaled seven.
The Blugolds final match of the tournament proved to be the closest of them all but Eau Claire was able to outlast St. Scholastica as they won 3-1 with game scores of 31-29, 30-27, 25-30, and 32-30. Carstensen had an incredible match as she tallied 19 kills while making just one error for a kill percentage of .667. Wozniak-Schmidt and Kabat also had solid matches as they each totaled 14 kills. Newcomer Carly Freiborg (Fr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) showed dominance in the serving game as she totaled eight service aces while also compiling 35 assists. Missy Malvitz played the back row beautifully as she was able to dig 28 balls.
The Blugolds return to action Friday night when they battle UW-Platteville in the WIAC opener at Eau Claire. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the McPhee Physical Education Center.
