Roger Steen

Roger Steen enters his 11th season as an Assistant Throws Coach for the UW-Eau Claire men's and women's track and field teams in 2025-26. 

Steen has been a part of the Blugold Track and Field program since fall of 2011 when he was a student-athlete himself. He was part of the 2015 Indoor national championship team; which was a first in the program’s history. Steen is a two-time Division III national champion in the shot put and a five-time All-American. Steen was also an athlete on the UW-Eau Claire football team and was an All-WIAC player in 2014 . He graduated in 2016 with a double major in Business Administration and Kinesiology.

Steen has assisted in coaching Blugolds to seven shot put national championships and two discus national titles. He has helped coach national champions Yakob Ekoue, Catie Fobbe, David Kornack, Alex Mess and Erica Oawster. During Steen's time at Eau Claire, the Blugolds have earned 30 All-America honors in throwing events. He has been a part of four men’s Division III national championship teams.

Steen has continued to pursue his shot put career post-graduation and has established himself as one of the top Americans in the event. He was the runner-up in shot put at the 2024 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships and earned a spot on the U.S. team for the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, where he finished 13th. He has competed at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials three times, fighting for a spot at the Olympics in 2016, 2021 and 2024. He finished sixth at the 2024 Trials, ninth in 2021 and 20th in 2016.

Steen placed fifth at the 2022 Outdoor USA Track and Field Championships. Steen then qualified for and won the 2022 North American Central American Championships (NACAC) in the Bahamas. He has also competed on the professional Diamond League circuit.

Steen is the farthest throwing shot-putter in history to have competed as a Division III collegiate athlete. His personal best is 22.08 meters.
