Four Blugolds Earn Fifth or Better at Don Parker Open

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team hosted the annual Don Parker open on Saturday. With over 180 wrestlers competing on the day, Eau Claire saw four Blugolds place in the top 5 of their respective brackets.
 
Calvin Singewald took fourth place in the 133 division with three wins and two losses on the afternoon. Singewald began his day with a 3-0 decision win over UW-Whitewater's Tyler Tiangco. In the Quarterfinals, Calvin defeated Division II UW-Parkside's Lincoln Flayter by 13-7 decision to earn a spot in the semifinals. In the semis, Singewald fell to Division II South Dakota State's Kenton Cooke by 13-5 major decision. In the third-place match, Calvin Singewald fell to Parkside's Matthew Chi by a close 10-9 decision to earn fourth place overall.
 
Ethan Struck placed fourth in the 157-weight class with two wins, two losses, and a win by forfeit. The opening round saw Struck defeat Augsburg's Jovan Vukajlovic by a tight 5-4 decision. In the second round, Struck advanced past Rochester Community Technical College's Nicolas Kreger with a pin in 2:17. After a win by forfeit in the quarterfinals, Struck fell to South Dakota State's Zach Ballante by a 19-3 tech fall. In the third-place match, Ethan faced off with Division I Wisconsin's Lane Robinson and fell by 4-1 decision.

Jackson Peak earned a fourth-place finish in the 197 brackets with two wins and two losses on the day. Peak started his day with a commanding 19-1 tech fall over unattached Logan Degenhardt. In the quarterfinals, Jackson won over Division II North Dakota State's Bradley Whitright with an 8-5 decision. After falling in the semifinals to NDSU's Tayshaun Glover, Peak fell in the third-place match to NDSU's Adam Cherne by pinfall.
 
Cole Matulenko was the fourth Blugold to earn a top 5 spot on the day, placing fifth overall in the 285 division. Matulenko began his day with a 15-0 tech fall over UW-Oshkosh's Camden Harms. In the second round, Cole earned his second tech fall of the afternoon, defeating Whitewater's Isaak Smith, 16-0. After falling in the quarterfinals, Matulenko picked up back-to-back wins with a 16-5 major decision victory and a 16-14 decision victory. In the consolation finals, Matulenko defeated Division II St. Cloud State's Sam Winkels by 6-0 decision to earn fifth overall.

The Blugolds will gear up for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, February 14 at the McPhee Gymnasium in Eau Claire, Wis. First bouts are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
