COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team was back on the road Saturday as they competed at the North Country Invitational hosted by Saint John's University. UW-Eau Claire dominated the brackets with seven Blugolds placing first in their respective divisions and another nine placing second or third.
Ben Peterson was victorious in the 184 Gold division with a pin over Concordia-Moorhead's Aidan Russell at 1:51. Peterson then defeated Morehead's Dante Novembre by a 14-2 major decision.
Finn Bloomquist won the 149 Gold bracket with three wins on the day. The opening draw saw Bloomquist defeat Concordia's Jackson Marr by a 16-3 major decision. In the semifinals, Bloomquist defeated Zachary Thompson from Moorhead by a narrow 6-5 decision victory. In the finals, Bloomquist defeated the Cobbers' by a 11-1 major decision.
Gavin Rockey placed first in the Gold 125 bracket after an opening 16-1 tech fall against Moorhead's Anthony Strong. After a forfeit in the semifinals, Rockey pinned fellow Blugold
Travis Moelter at 4:50 to take the top spot.
Preston Carlisle dominated the 174 Gold division, going 4-0 on the day. Carlisle captured two pins against Moorhead's Quinton Harcey in 46 seconds and Minnesota North-Itasca's Romen Weber in 1:29.
Tristan Drier also took first in the 165 Gold pool, going 3-0 on the day. Drier tallied a pin over Concordia's Zach Pribyl in 5:24. Drier added a 4-3 decision win over Moorhead's Nicholas Ankeny and a 23-1 tech fall over teammate
Bryson Kundinger.
Tiago Bertoldo Zwicky won the 133 Red division with a pin, a tech fall, and a 7-6 decision.
Carter Friend won the 165 Red pool with two tech falls and a 7-6 decision win.
The Blugolds will return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Thursday, January 22 when they host UW-Stevens Point at the McPhee Gymnasium. First bouts are scheduled for 7 p.m.
