EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team defeated UW-Stevens Point 4-0 in the opening round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament (Presented by Culver's) on Friday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds took the opening game of the two-game series in shutout fashion to begin their postseason on a high note.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (18-8-0) scored once in both the first and second periods before putting the game away with two more goals in the third.
- Quinn Hartmetz (Sr. - Phoenixville, Pa./Gilmour Academy) scored the opener with just under nine minutes remaining in the first period. McKenna Sandberg (So. - Saint Michael, Minn./Rogers) assisted.
- Adrienne Hansen (Fr. - Monticello, Minn.) doubled the lead with a goal early in the second period. Sam Moehle (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) and Ava Bullert (Jr. - North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) had the assists.
- Ava Johansson (So. - Rogers, Minn.) made it 3-0 in favor of UW-Eau Claire midway through the third. Hansen finished off the win with her second goal off a power play with under six minutes to go.
- Alexa Backmann (So. - Rogers, Minn.) made 17 saves in net to earn the shutout.
- The Blugolds out-shot the Pointers (12-13-1) 32-17.

The series resumes with Game 2 on Saturday, March 1, at 7 p.m. A trip to the WIAC Championship is on the line.
