Krumholz Scores Twice and Freije Secures Shutout as Blugolds Take Down Defending Champions

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - UW-Eau Claire (6-1-0, 3-0-0) shut out UW-River Falls (4-1-0, 1-1-0), 3-0, with all goals scored in the third period. The Blugolds' defense was strong as their goaltender made 35 saves to secure the victory.

Both teams traded early opportunities, with UW-River Falls testing goalkeeper Kambelle Freije frequently. Freije proved solid in net, stopping several attempts from the River Falls offense, and was helped by blocks by Ava Bullert. UW-Eau Claire's Adrienne Hansen took a penalty for body checking at 18:44, granting River Falls a power play, but the Blugolds' defense held firm. Despite multiple power-play chances and shots from UW-River Falls, the period concluded scoreless, with both teams unable to capitalize on their opportunities.

The second period saw UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls engaged in a defensive battle, with neither team able to break through for a goal. UW-Eau Claire's Ava Bullert and Lauren Ballinger made key blocks early, shutting down UW-River Falls' attempts. Ashley Wagenbach led several offensive pushes for UW-Eau Claire, but Jordan O'Kane in the River Falls net denied multiple shots. Kambelle Freije also made crucial saves to maintain the scoreless tie at the close of the period.

UW-Eau Claire secured a decisive victory over UW-River Falls with a 3-0 win in the third period. Madisyn Krumholz opened the scoring at 15:45 with an unassisted goal that stood as the game-winner. Keira Bolt extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal assisted by Krumholz and Sam Moehle at 10:43. Krumholz sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 00:27, assisted by Kylie Wiltse. Goaltender Kambelle Freije was instrumental, making multiple key saves to maintain the shutout.

Madisyn Krumholz led the team with two goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal, and posted a plus-minus of +3. Keira Bolt contributed with a goal on her single shot attempt, adding to the team's offensive efforts. Ava Bullert recorded four blocks, helping to strengthen the defense. Lauren Ballinger excelled in faceoffs, winning 71% and also recorded a plus-minus of +3. In net, Kambelle Freije made an impressive 35 saves, keeping the opponent scoreless.

The Blugolds improve to 6-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play after their victory. UW-River Falls goes to 4-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference competition following the loss.
