EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire defeated the College of St. Scholastica, 85-58, at the Sonnentag Event Center, capitalizing on a strong second half. The Blugolds outscored the Saints 51-29 after halftime and forced 23 turnovers, converting them into 34 points. The team also dominated the boards with a 51-33 rebounding advantage.
The game commenced with the Saints sinking a three-pointer at 9:34, quickly putting the visitors ahead. UW-Eau Claire's
Kyla Overskei tied the game at 6-6 with a jumper, assisted by
Kailey Tulachka at 6:25.
Reanna Hutchinson added to the home team's efforts with a layup at 4:54, reducing the deficit to one. However, St. Scholastica responded with another three-pointer, extending the Saints' lead. Despite
Sophie Hafeman's two successful free throws at 2:14, the first quarter concluded with the Saints leading 14-12.
The Blugolds gained momentum in the second quarter, overtaking the Saints with a 22-15 advantage.
Britta DeMar opened the scoring for the home team with a layup at 8:55, assisted by
Paige Keller.
Olivia Witkowski and
Emily Vogel contributed crucial free throws and rebounds, respectively, maintaining the home team's slight edge.
Kyla Overskei's three-pointer at 2:01 shifted the lead, and with 40 seconds left,
Emily Vogel's two free throws extended the margin. The quarter concluded with Overskei's jumper, sealing a 34-29 advantage for the Blugolds by the end of the quarter.
UW-Eau Claire extended their lead significantly during the third quarter, outscoring the Saints 29-13.
Kyla Overskei sparked the offense with a layup at 9:25 and followed it with a three-pointer at 7:29. Reanne Hutchinson contributed with two three-pointers, the first coming at 8:13, which widened the gap.
Macie Miller capped off the quarter with a layup at 00:11, ensuring a comfortable 63-42 lead heading into the final quarter. The Saints struggled against the home team's defense, managing only 13 points in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Blugolds maintained their lead with a strong offensive performance, securing a 22-point quarter.
Karsyn Bauman contributed significantly with a layup and subsequent free throw at 2:59, extending the lead to 80-58.
Kyla Overskei added a key three-pointer at 3:48, supported by
Delaney Nyenhuis' assist, pushing the advantage further. Despite a couple of scoring bursts from the Saints, including a three-pointer at 4:03, UWEC's consistent scoring and defensive effort secured their victory.
Kyla Overskei scored 32 points and made five 3-pointers, leading the scoring for the Blugolds. Reanne Hutchinson added 17 points and recorded eight rebounds.
Delaney Nyenhuis contributed significantly on defense, tallying five steals and collecting eight rebounds.
Karsyn Bauman was perfect from the field, scoring nine points on 3-of-3 shooting.
UW-Eau Claire holds a 3-1 overall record in the WIAC. The Saints stand at 3-1 overall in MIAC play.
In their next game, the Blugolds will travel to face Simpson College on Saturday, Nov. 22. The matchup is set for 6 p.m. at Cowles Fieldhouse in Indianola, Iowa.
