Blugolds Blank Cobbers for Season Opening Sweep

MOORHEAD, Minn. — UW-Eau Claire (2-0-0) secured a 2-0 victory over Concordia College, Moorhead (0-2-0) with a third-period surge, including an empty-net goal.

The first period concluded with a scoreless draw between UW-Eau Claire and Concordia-M'head. Both goalies, Kambelle Freije for UW-Eau Claire and Abby Huselid for Concordia-M'head, were tested multiple times but withstood the pressure to keep the game tied. Concordia-M'head's Jaclyn Lloyd and Memphis Mertens managed to get shots on goal, while UW-Eau Claire's Ashley Wagenbach and Lauren Ballinger also had attempts saved. The period saw multiple penalties, with UW-Eau Claire's McKenna Sandberg and Adrienne Hansen both serving time in the box, but Concordia-M'head could not capitalize on the power plays. The evenly matched play led to a tight contest going into the second period.

In the second period, UW-Eau Claire had several opportunities to score but failed to capitalize on a power play early in the period. Keira Bolt and Hansen were active on offense, but Huselid for Concordia-M'head made key saves to keep the game scoreless. The Cobbers also had a power play midway through the period, with Taylyn Cope taking multiple shots, yet they could not break the deadlock, with Freije in goal for the Blugolds standing firm. A late penalty on Allie Emineth gave UW-Eau Claire another power play opportunity, but the period ended without a goal from either side.

UW-Eau Claire secured a decisive victory over Concordia-M'head with a 2-0 scoreline, highlighted by two third-period goals. Kenzie Keller broke the deadlock with an even-strength goal at 12:19, assisted by Jordan Hancock. The Blugolds' defense was solid throughout, effectively neutralizing the Cobbers' power plays. Ava Bullert sealed the win with an unassisted empty-net goal at 19:14, ensuring UWEC's triumph.

Bullert scored one goal, contributing to the team's offensive effort. Keller notched a goal and secured the game-winning tally, proving critical in the final outcome. Madisyn Krumholz recorded an assist and maintained a perfect faceoff win percentage, winning all two of her faceoffs. In goal, Freije made 13 saves to keep the opposing team scoreless.

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire improved to 2-0-0 with their victory. Concordia-M'head fell to 0-2-0 on the season.
