EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team dropped its series opener against Concordia-Moorhead 3-1 on Friday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds put a barrage on the Cobbers' net, but Concordia was up to the task to win the first contest of a two-game series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The ninth-ranked Blugolds (10-5-0) peppered Concordia's net with 45 shots, but the Cobbers' goalie made 44 saves.
- The Cobbers (2-9-0) got on the board first, scoring a short-handed goal midway through the first period. They led 1-0 at the intermission.
- McKenna Sandberg (So. - Saint Michael, Minn./Rogers) scored an equalizer for the Blugolds early in the second period. It came off assists from Ava Johansson (So. - Rogers, Minn.) and Quinn Hartmetz (Sr. - Phoenixville, Pa./Gilmour Academy).
- Concordia scored the game-winning goal just 1:21 after Sandberg's strike.
- The Cobbers added a third goal just past the halfway mark of the third period. The Blugolds pushed for a rally, but couldn't solve the Cobbers' goalie.
- Tegan Swanson (Fr. - Eden Prairie, Minn.) made 21 saves in net for UW-Eau Claire.
