NEKOOSA, Wis. (
www.blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's golf team was back in Wisconsin on Sunday and Monday for the WIAC Championships held at Lake Arrowhead Golf Course. With six teams in the field, UW-Eau Claire's top team took first overall with a three round combined score of 865 and the B team took second with a total of 884 strokes.
Nick Amtmann (Jr. – Nashotah, Wis./Arrowhead) tied the program's lowest round with a round of 66, helping him earn the lowest individual score of the tournament.
Sunday's opening round saw both Blugold squads jump into the top two spots on the leaderboard and were separated by just one stroke. Eau Claire's first team was led by
Nick Amtmann who completed a two-under par round of 70 to begin his terrific weekend.
Carson Brock (Sr. – Onalaksa, Wis./Holmen) and
Spencer Lynch (Fr. – Neenah, Wis./St. Mary Catholic) were close behind Amtmann with a pair of 74's to help the team into first place with 293 strokes. UWEC's second team slid right into second place after a squad total of 294 strokes.
Ryan Jamieson (Fr. – St. Paul, Minn./White Bear Lake) led the B team in the first round with an 18-hole score of 72.
Fred Moede (Jr. – Savage, Minn./Prior Lake),
Corey Boerner (Sr. – Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy), and
Nick Mueller (Fr. – Baldwin, Wis./St. Croix Central) all recorded rounds of 74 to help keep Eau Claire on top.
The second round of the tournament saw the Blugolds pull away from the competition with teams scores of 282 and 299.
Carson Brock held the low round of the morning coming into the clubhouse with a 67.
Spencer Lynch continued his consistent play with a round of 70 and
Ben Pausha (So. – Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) came in at one under par with a 71. For the second team,
Griffin Oberneder (So. – Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) held the low score of the middle round with a 71 as well.
Corey Boerner knocked home a 74, while
Nick Mueller and
Fred Moede recorded a pair of 77's before the final round.
With 18 left to play, UWEC stood on top of the leaderboard with healthy leads over the third-place team.
Nick Amtmann made history during the third installation of the tournament as he sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18
th hole to tie the program's lowest round ever of 66 strokes. Amtmann's historic round was also the lowest amongst any competitor during the tournament and earned him a first-place finish individually.
Carson Brock was the next highest Blugold on the leaderboard as he shot a 75 and earned third place overall.
Spencer Lynch turned in a round of 73 to earn a fourth-place finish and
Corey Boerner came in two under par for a 70 and a tie for 5
th place. UW-Eau Claire finished first and second overall amongst a field of six teams from UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point.
The Blugolds will wrap up their regular season schedule on Sunday, May 5 in Blaine, Minn. at the Bethel Quadrangular. Tee times are set to begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Victory Links Golf Course.
