MILWAUKEE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team placed second out of 12 teams at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invite on Saturday at the Kern Center. The third-ranked Blugolds got individual titles from
Preston Carlisle (Jr. - Red Wing, Minn./Cannon Falls) and
Zach Sato (Sr. - Oswego, Ill.). at the tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds tallied 127 points. They finished only behind sixth-ranked Augsburg, which won the meet with 176.
- Sato was the 149-pound champion and Carlisle was the 165-pound champion.
- Sato, ranked No. 2 in Division III, went 4-0 on the day, winning twice by technical fall and twice by decision. He defeated 11th-ranked Matt Randolph of Augsburg by 3-1 decision in the finals.
- Carlisle won all three of his matches to clinch the 165-pound bracket. He won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by first-period pins. He led in the championship match before his opponent was disqualified.
- Travis Moelter (So. - River Falls, Wis.), Landon Church (So. - Jordan, Minn./Scott West) and Ian Pepple (So. - Hastings, Minn.) all had runner-up finishes. Moelter went 3-1 at 133 pounds, Church was 3-1 at 157 pounds and Pepple went 2-1 at 197.
- Cole Matulenko (So. - Libertyville, Ill.) took third at 197 pounds.
- Jan Hernandez-Soto (Sr. - Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry) and Zak McPhee (Fr. - Duluth, Minn./Proctor) had fourth-place finishes at 165 and 184, respectively.

The Blugolds will host a top-three showdown when they host No. 2 UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) dual on Wednesday, December 11. Wrestling begins at 7 p.m. at the McPhee Center.
